MAKING SHARROW A SAFER NEIGHBOURHOOD

The Police and Partner Organisations in the Sharrow Safer Neighbourhood Area have worked together on a number of initiatives throughout 2009 in an effort to reduce crime and Anti-Social Behaviour in the area.

The good news is that overall, crime has reduced by 18% this past year, vehicle crime has reduced by 32% and burglaries by 51%.

Many crimes can still be prevented by a few simple actions, you can help us to reduce crime even further by following these simple steps.

1.VEHICLE SECURITY Always choose a well lit and secure car park where available and never leave anything on display in your vehicle, especially laptops, Sat Nav's , mobile phones, handbags, shopping bags, keys or money. DO NOT HIDE YOUR SAT NAV IN YOUR GLOVE BOX OR UNDER THE SEAT.A good tip is to leave your glove box open to show that there is nothing worth stealing!

2.HOME SECURITY Always keep your exterior doors locked at all times EVEN WHEN YOU ARE AT HOME. It only takes a few seconds for a burglar to sneak in whilst you are in another part of the house. Windows should also be closed and locked where possible, especially ground floor windows, when you leave your home or when you go to bed. If you do have a burglar alarm installed, please remember to use it. Also keys should never be left in a door or near to the door, so keep them out of sight. Find out if there is a Neighbourhood Watch Scheme on your street. If there isn't already one you could consider setting one up yourself. For further information contact your local Police Team or South Yorkshire Neighbourhood Watch at www.synwa.com. "Watches" encourage people to share crime prevention tips, keep an eye on each other's property and improve security.

Following these simple steps can really help to reduce your chances of becoming a victim of crime.

Finally if you have any information about criminal activity or Anti-Social Behaviour in your area, or you see any person or vehicle acting suspiciously then PLEASE REPORT IT , no matter how trivial it may seem.

To discuss any issue with your local officers contact Sharrow Safer Neighbourhood Team on 0114 2963187.

Alternatively, to report a crime, you can contact South Yorkshire Police on 0114 2202020(24hrs), 101 to report noise complaints and Anti-Social Behaviour or Crime Stoppers anonymously 0800 555111.

All information is treated in the strictest confidence and if you wish anonymously.

HELICOPTER VISIT

On 18th February 2010 9Thursday) the Sheffield Chinese Community Centre had taken a group of young people to visit the South Yorkshire Police Air Support Unit and saw the Helicopter used by the Police Force. This visit was arranged with the help of the Sharrow Safer Neighbourhood Team and Sheffield City Council.

This is the latest in a long line of engagement between the safer neighbourhood team and the Chinese community centre, following the recent competition on promoting the dangers of weapons knives and guns from a young persons perspective and staying safe.

The South Yorkshire Police helicopter (known as SY99)first flew in the air back in 2003. It is the second helicopter to have a career with South Yorkshire’s Air Operations. The helicopter offers visual and tracking support to police officers on the ground. The majority of the support they provide involves searching, whether this is for a missing person, a vehicle, stolen property or a suspect.

The young people from the Sheffield Chinese Community Centre had the opportunity to look around the aircraft and learn about the specialist equipment at the presentation.

All the young people were excited to have a tour around the helicopter and ask the Andy the pilot and Matt the police officer, some searching questions. SY99’ flew into the area in December 2003 at a cost of £4m. It’s operated by the Air Support Unit and aids the work of officers on the ground by conducting specialist pursuits and searches.

It was a great opportunity to show the many different areas of Police work and may even inspire some of the youngsters to think of becoming police officers in the future. Most of the young people from our group wanting to be doctors and heart surgeons, well there is room for them in the police!
